Getting involved - How can I help?

There are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the PTFA - we are always happy to welcome new volunteers! You might feel you could not take on a major role like Secretary or Treasurer but have you thought of all the skills you have - just 10 minutes of one of those skills could be invaluable at an event.

Being part of the PTFA needn’t be a big commitment. Some parents may be put off by the thought of being burdened with hours of volunteering. This is NOT the case, most PTFA members work, so they give as much or as little time as they can - we work on the basis of lots of people doing little bits. It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you cannot come into school. There are always jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare e.g. wrapping gifts, preparing raffle tickets etc. We really couldn’t achieve what we do without the behind the scenes help that we receive and so we are happy for occasional helpers. You don’t even have to attend every meeting as we communicate via email and will often circulate an email request for occasional helpers to assist at events.

Apart from donating your time, you can help us too by letting us know if you have any contacts or skills we could use, everything is potentially valuable to us. If you would like to be more involved you can volunteer to be a Committee Member or Occasional Volunteer. Or you can simply support the AGM and give us your ideas for fundraising events. This is also the time to ask questions or voice your opinion.

To give you an idea of the sort of help we regularly need, here are a few tasters:

  • Helping to set up and / or run a stall at the Summer Fayre
  • Wrapping a few Christmas presents at home/school
  • Occasional ‘phone call to book events (all details provided)
  • Collection of provisions from supermarket/wholesaler
  • Helping to design and distribute posters and tickets
  • Ad-hoc photocopying of newsletters in school
  • Helping out on the door or refreshment stall at end of term/Christmas discos
  • Volunteer to be a Quiz Master or Bingo Caller
  • If you work for a large national company or bank they often have policies where they will allow paid time off work for employees to participate in charity work, or match any funds raised by their employees for a charity. Your HR team may know if your company offer similar schemes.
  • Some companies offer sponsorship for charities, again your HR team may be aware of a scheme if it exists.
  • If you have your own business maybe you help by donating a prize for a raffle or use the easyfundraising site to make any purchases you need

Why get involved?

We organise activities to benefit all of our children. Through successful fundraising events during the year, the PTFA are able to purchase, extra resources for the school. In addition to the fundraising for additional resources and organising additional fun events for our children, helping out is very rewarding and tremendous fun. By being part of the PTFA you will meet new parents and will feel more involved in the life of the school and that of your child. Apart from helping out and ‘giving something back’, it’s actually great fun! The children really love their Mums and Dads being part of the PTFA and feel a sense of pride that their parents are getting involved – they see their parents and the school working together for their benefit and they appreciate this united effort and it adds to their feeling of security.

Come along and join us, volunteer your time or your expertise and we guarantee you’ll have fun!
