Intent
History at Five Ways offers learners a wealth of opportunities to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and to form conclusions based on primary and secondary sources and their authors. It enables pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and what went before and how it affects the present. To develop resilience and collaborative working to become life-long learners. To question and to challenge, whilst respecting perspectives and opinions.
Implementation
At Five Ways we plan and deliver lessons of history that are outlined in the national curriculum. Teams plan collaboratively, exploring cross-curricular threads to maximise connections and to embed learning further for all children. We use a range of strategies to offer a balanced, inclusive and engaging curriculum. We foster opportunities for the children to develop their knowledge and skills through research, questioning and the use of resources. At Five Ways, we believe that experiential opportunities including visits and visitors promote the love of history.
Impact
At Five Ways, we strive for all children to become confident and successful historians. To experience the opportunity to learn about the past by asking historical questions of their own and creating their own conclusions. We aim for the children to leave Five Ways with the necessary historical skills to access their secondary education with a positive and respectful attitude. For our children to reflect on previous learning and chronological understanding to enable them to enhance their historical journey.
